Think about class today and reflect on the presentations you listened to. Explain with details and specific information what you learned and what you found interesting about the presentations you heard in class. If you need to refresh your memory, you can look at he notes you took in class to review information about the rise and fall of the different African kingdoms.
Note: Please post your reflection on your blog.

[...] Link to assignment: http://ssmeetsit.edublogs.org/2006/11/30/homework-for-block-d-wednesday-29-november/ In class today, we learned about the history of west Africa. I learned many things. The most interesting things I learned were how the Morrocans attacked Gao and reduced the Songhai army to half it’s size, how Ghana used military to tax traders, and how Ghana gradually got bigger and turned into Mali, then Songhai. I found the Morrocan attack on Gao very interesting because Songhai was very big, and probably had a big army, so it was amazing that the Morrocan army brought the Songhai army to half it’s size! I also thought that the way Ghana used military to tax traders was interesting because that was a very smart way of making sure that they earned money for being the main trading spot. Ghana turning into Mali, then Songhai was interesting for me because of how much one place changed over time. In conclusion, I thought learning these things was very interesting. • • • [...]

[...] Click here to go to the assignment page What I learned:The Kingdom Of Gold In this slide I learned that the Trans-Sahara trade was the strongest trade in West Africa, from 800AD-1050. The people of Ghana had a religion (unknown) that believed in one major God, but there were also smaller Gods (e.g. a Health God, a Nature God). Governor officials converted to Islam and a lot of other Ghanaians also converted from Sonike to Islam. The king and queen always had the last judgment in a crime. Koumbi, Ghana’s capital traded gold and became very popular. The Kingdom of Mali Under Mansa Musa Mali remained in power for 42 centuries; the empire was twice the size of Ghana. ON his pilgrimage to Mali, Mansa Musa brought 60,000 people, 500 being slaves, along with him, each carried one gold block. Since Mali became so important, the Europeans had to put it on the new maps! How The Songhai Empire Grew In 1435 two brothers, Ali Kolant and Sulayman, declared Goa’s (a city in Songhai) independence from Mali, with the help of the Junni law. Askia rose to power in 1490 from the people who didn’t like Ali Kolant’s son. Askia made Songhai bigger than Mali and Ghana put together by spreading Islam east. In 1438, Songhai replaced Mali as the greatest empire in West Sudan. The Conquest of Songhai by Morocco Al-Mansur, Morocco’s Sultan wanted to control the salt and gold trade so he could get rich and fund his army. Al-Mansur made no prophet from the salt mines, because Songhai passed a law that stated that you could not trade with his salt mines. Al-Mansur got very angry, so he sent his armies to Songhai. The attack reduced the Songhai army by ½, so Songhai retreated and Morocco won! Songhai offered slaves and gold, but Morocco kept fighting until the law was deleted. Morocco conquered West Africa. No countries had their needed supplies because Morocco had everything! [...]
